What is Škocjan Caves?

Škocjan Caves is a massive underground cave system in southwestern Slovenia, near the town of Divača. It’s one of the largest known underground canyons in the world, carved by the Reka River as it disappears underground. Inside, you’ll find enormous chambers, waterfalls, and underground passages that stretch for more than six kilometres (3.7 mi).

The caves are part of the protected Škocjan Caves Regional Park, which also includes walking trails above ground where you can explore the unique karst landscape.

What can you expect on a visit to Škocjan?

A visit to Škocjan is all about stepping into a hidden world beneath the earth. You’ll start at the visitor centre and join a guided tour, then pass through enormous underground chambers with ceilings that soar more than 100 metres (328 feet) high. Right from the start, you’ll notice the cool temperature (around 12°C/54°F year-round) and the sound of the Reka River rushing through the darkness.

As you move deeper, you’ll walk through huge chambers with soaring ceilings and dramatic rock formations. You’ll see stalactites and stalagmites, sparkling mineral deposits, hidden pools and waterfalls. The highlight is the main canyon, where a bridge takes you high above the roaring river. It’s the kind of sight that stays with you long after your visit, not just for its size, but for the atmosphere. Our guide even pointed out narrow stone steps carved high into the walls, once used by early explorers. They look impossibly steep and dangerous, and while the paths today are much safer, it gives you a real appreciation for what those first journeys into the caves must have felt like.

The underground part of the tour ends with a climb back toward the surface. Once above ground, the experience continues as you follow trails through Škocjan Caves Regional Park. The path offers viewpoints where you can pause, take in the scenery that’s been formed by the karst terrain, and start to process everything you’ve just seen below ground. It feels like two experiences in one: an unforgettable underground adventure followed by a peaceful walk through the area afterwards.

Is Škocjan worth visiting?

Yes , Škocjan is absolutely worth visiting, and it offers a very different experience from other caves in Slovenia. Many travellers make a special trip just to see it. Even if you’ve already been to Postojna or explored other karst caves, Škocjan’s scale and underground canyon make it unforgettable. Plan on spending at least half a day here so you have time for the cave tour and the above-ground trails.

This is a place for anyone who enjoys nature, unique landscapes or a bit of adventure. You don’t need to be a hardcore hiker, but you should be comfortable with walking and stairs.

Tips for visiting Škocjan Caves

Good footwear is important. The paths are paved but can be damp and uneven. Because of the stairs, the cave tours are not accessible for anyone who has impaired mobility.

Bring a light jacket. It stays cool inside the cave year-round.

Photography isn’t allowed inside. You’ll have to rely on your memory.

You can only enter the caves on a guided tour. Check the schedule ahead of time; departure times change by season. Or book a tour that includes transportation from Ljubljana.

Combine a visit to the caves with nearby sights. The Lipica Stud Farm (famous for Lipizzaner horses) and the seaside town of Trieste, Italy, are both within easy reach. If you’re staying in Trieste, you can take a tour that includes both the Lipica Stud Farm and Škocjan.

Škocjan Caves is located near Divača in southwestern Slovenia, about 75 km (47 mi) from Ljubljana and 35 km (22 mi) from Trieste, Italy. Driving from Ljubljana takes just over an hour. From Trieste, it’s about 45 minutes by car, or just over an hour by train and bus.

There’s free parking available near the visitor centre.

By public transport, take a train or bus to Divača, then either walk about 30 minutes or take a short taxi ride to the caves.

From the visitor centre, you’ll join your group and walk a short distance through the park to reach the cave entrance.
